By Way of Introduction
I am a writer, editor, designer, translator and publisher. I also apply these
skills as a consultant. Currently, I am publisher and editor of Russian
Life magazine and president of Russian Information Services, a publishing
company I founded in 1990, based in Montpelier, Vermont. RIS is a leading publisher
of English language publications on Russia, creating original books and maps
and publishing the 51-year-old magazine, Russian
Life. This page lists some of my writing, editing and translation work.
Current Projects...
Back in April, we released the updated Second Edition of our Bilingual Wall Map of Russia. So, this summer, Putin and Medvedev have set about jiggering with Russia's borders. Not yet, but it's coming... We're hard at work now on the first issue of the second year of our new quarterly
journal, Chtenia,
and of course the Nov/Dec issue of Russian
Life. In the first week of October, our 2009 Wall Calendar ("The Golden Ring") will arrive and start flying out to pre-buyers.
Russia Survival Guide: Business & Travel
This book went through seven editions from October 1990 to November 1996
(and one edition in Korean), at which
point I achieved full burnout and decided to stop updating it. The title
is currently out of print, but may be available on ebay, Amazon or elsewhere.
The Los
Angeles Times called
RSG, "A treasure house of... indispensable intelligence for any
person visiting either of the two great Russian capitals for any reason
whatsoever."
Where in Moscow / Where in St. Petersburg
These are two very popular city guides I designed, edited and compiled
alongside the publication of RSG. But, with the appearance of free
city guides in Moscow and St. Petersburg in the late 1990s, these
books became untenable.
Moscow & St. Petersburg City Maps
I oversaw the creation of these popular maps, based originally on Cold
War CIA maps of Moscow and St. Petersburg. The fine cartography was
originally done by Northern Cartographics, of Burlington, Vermont.
These have been out of print for a few years, but we are planning to
bring them back into print soon. Really.
Bilingual Wall Map of Russia and the Republics
Back when GIS was new, we created this first-ever
all GIS-based map of Russia. Again, the cartography was by the fine
folks at Northern
Cartographic, of Burlington, Vermont (also did original work on the
city maps). These popular maps, which have the unique feature of being
all in Russian on one side, all in English on the other, are in their
second printing since being released in 1996.
